After unravelling the sequence of the genome in many organisms including human, life science research quickly focused on to the interpretation of this information within directly observable states of a cell. The sequences of eukaryotic genomes suggest that the complexity of biochemical activity in organisms is not mediated by an increase in gene numbers, but rather by more complex protein-protein interactions. In that context, the cell can be easily viewed as a factory where assembly lines made of proteins take things apart or put them together. The most intriguing fact is that the function of these assembly lines varies over time and corresponds to the changing environment. As a consequence, establishing the molecular interactions which form the basis of regulatory networks is one of the major tasks of post-genomics molecular biology.
