Energy Storage in Ultra-high Pressure Hydrogen System without Compressor (HYEST)

Požadovaný rozpočet: 4.430.541 EUR

HYEST project introduces a breakthrough innovation in energy storage in the form of ultra-high pressure (300 bar) hydrogen without any use of expensive compressors, which enables dramatic (50%) reduction of costs to store energy for unlimited time, with its further use as fuel or raw material, in multiple zero emissions industrial applications. This will be achieved through fundamental multidisciplinary research and testing of new structural concepts and materials, with the aim to develop radically new type of ultra-high pressure water electrolyser system, which fully utilizes internal electrochemical compression and thus allows to go far beyond the currently existing hydrogen generation pressure limits, obviously without the compressors inefficiency. Such compact and modular locally available energy storage system, will significantly increase the accessibility and reliability of renewable energy supply sources, it will enable stable fuel and chemicals production from air, water, and solar/wind and thus it will become a significant step of the European society towards energy/resource independency and sustainability. HYEST consortium is composed predominantly of the technology oriented SME’s which have clear exploitation plans for the generated know how and furthermore, the consortium includes industrial partners from energy intensive industrial sectors, to make sure that in the midterm perspective, the proposed technology will be widely utilized, practically eradicate climate change, air pollutions and energy poverty worldwide thus it will truly pave the way towards achievement of the EU Green Deal agenda the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Next-generation of High Pressure & High Volume Containerized Hydrogen Pressure Vessel for Efficient Storage and Flexible Delivery (H2VESSEL)

Požadovaný rozpočet: 2.454.130 EUR

As a clean energy carrier, feedstock and fuel, Hydrogen can enable zero pollution and decarbonisation of transport, heating & cooling, and energy-intensive industries, facilitate the large-scale integration of renewables, enabling grid balancing and seasonal storage through innovative technologies. Then why is a Hydrogen economy, still a long-term goal and not an everyday reality? There are two issues: 1. Cheap green Hydrogen generation; 2. Cost effective Hydrogen distribution. Our project “H2VESSEL” cannot solve all Hydrogen Economy widespread adoption challenges, but it definitely can and will solve one of them – costly and inefficient Hydrogen distribution. Our solution is built on our previously demonstrated development of the biggest in the world Carbon Fiber (CF) based composite pressure vessel (PV) capable to transport gas at 300 bar. In the H2VESSEL project we will prove compatibility of our PV with Hydrogen at 700 bar, test and certify it as the biggest and most economical pressurized Hydrogen transportation solution in the world. We will prove that our CF composite PVs are: bigger, lighter, cheaper. In comparison with available alternatives, our containerised Hydrogen transportation solution offers: 30% more volume (volumetric Hydrogen capacity at the same pressure), 25% lighter (tare weight for the same carried volume of Hydrogen), 50% cheaper (selling price for containerized solution). We will decrease Hydrogen distribution costs by more than 60%. Our solution represents a pragmatic and cost-efficient way for the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors, which will boost Hydrogen mobility and distribution.
